Regional Energy Agenda
Created on 2001
This Committee was created to support the energy integration process in the region, and provide the business perspective to governments which are the ones that lead them. To do so, it looked for the identification of the main obstacles to energy integration in the Region and how to solve them. The group has carried out several studies on Natural Gas Integration in South America, Main Barriers to Energy Integration, and Lessons Learned in the Integration Process in the MERCOSUR and organized two Symposiums on Energy integration as a way to promote a discussion forum with the participation of all players to foster effective actions.
Objectives
- Promote the organization of annual fora on Energy Integration with the participation of all players involved in the process with the purpose of looking for consensus on key issues to advance.
- Promote the cooperation of Member Companies to facilitate the joint analysis of issues of common interest to regional integration.
- Analyze regulatory issues that preclude the circulation of natural gas and electricity and foster changes.
- To identify the obstacles of regional energy integration, to create a discussion forum to provide solutions and to collaborate with the continuous improvement of the process.
Achievements
- Interaction with governments (Sub-Group 9 of Energy of the MERCOSUR, and Andean Community), international organizations (OLADE, CIER, ALADI, CEPAL) and financial institutions (IIRSA), presenting the status of energy integration, its barriers and future possible steps.
- Promotion of dialogue among business, governments, regulatory organizations, international organizations, financial institutions, universities and civil society organizations to progress and deepen the energy integration process in Latin America and the Caribbean through the organization of two Symposiums on Energy Integration and 5 Seminars on Instruments to Enhance Investment and Guarantee the Security of Supply in the Southern Cone.
- Promotion of the creation of the Regional Energy Integration Forum (FIER), organized by OLADE and supported by the regional organizations, which constitutes the environs in which the analysis of the energy integration process of the region is developed
- Exchange of experiences and knowledge among Member Companies.
Activities
The Committee is participating in the development of the project “ Sectoral Energy Report for Latin America & the Caribbean” whose objective is to have a clear vision of the current and future status of the energy sector in Latin America and the Caribbean and in the sub-regions making up the current integration processes, and evaluate the political, economic, social and business environment where the regional energy sector develops, so as to provide the relevant players with the information facilitating the identification of the main vectors. The project is jointly developed with ALADI, CIER, CEPAL & OLADE.
It also collaborates for the organization Regional Energy Integration Forum. The Forum is organized by OLADE with the support of the Regional Organizations: ARPEL, ALADI, CIER, and CEPAL, under the framework of an agreement among these organizations for the coordination of activities related to energy integration in the region. This Forum resulted as one of the main recommendations of the I and II Symposium on Energy Integration sponsored by ARPEL in October 2003 and November 2004 respectively.
