ENAP PRESENTED THE SUSTAINABILITY REPORT FOR 2014 AND ACCOUNTED FOR ITS SOCIO-ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT

  • Santiago, August 6, 2015. With the presence of authorities, representatives of the energy sector, trade associations, neighborhood representatives and workers, Empresa Nacional del Petróleo (ENAP) released its Sustainability Report, which accounts for the economic, social and environmental performance of the company during 2014.

The presentation was made by its General Manager, Marcelo Tokman, who outlined the main milestones of the 2014-2025 Strategic Plan on sustainability, highlighting the commitment of the state-owned company to the development of the communities close to its operations.

In this respect, the executive highlighted the signing of the Hualpén Suma Plan, an agreement between the company in the community of Hualpén, in the Biobío Region, and the authorities in the area. This plan seeks to create the conditions for progress in the relocation of 290 residents living near ENAP refinery, a long standing aspiration of this community. This plan also includes the support in other initiatives to improve the quality of life of the residents.

In addition, ENAP is making historical investments in its refineries to reduce their environmental impacts. “We have ensured that the existing gaps have been addressed and we have taken responsibility for them. In the report presented today, we show that we have taken responsibility for these gaps with transparency, we included them in the Strategic Plan and we are working today to close them,” Tokman said.

Furthermore, the company has made important contributions to the communities where it operates, both in Chile and abroad, primarily for the development of social, educational, cultural and sport programs. During 2014, ENAP made an investment of US$ 2.2 million in projects related to the improvement of the quality of life of these communities in Chile, Ecuador and Argentina.

“Today, citizens require commitment and involvement from companies to address their needs.   Dialogue, cooperation and respect are the main pillars for any company that considers itself to be socially responsible. We have taken on this challenge and do not want to remain apart,  on the contrary, we believe that our company must be a driving force for change,” Tokman stated.

Agreement for the support of energy audits

To continue advancing in sustainability, a Technical Cooperation Agreement between ENAP and CAF-Development Bank of Latin America was signed during the meeting. This agreement provides for the support of the latter to finance studies of energy audits of ENAP facilities and the implementation of the Energy Management System (EMS) in the company.

“Signing this agreement is an added milestone in our Strategic Plan which seeks to provide our company with international standards and develop modern processes efficiently and with respect for the environment, identifying opportunities for savings and efficiency in our operations,” Tokman concluded.
