Arpel was invited to participate in the sixth edition of the Madrid Energy Conference 2025, an event organized from May 6 to 8 by the Institute of the Americas to bring together energy sector professionals from Europe and the Americas.

Arpel was represented by Irene Alfaro, Senior Managing Director, who participated in the panel entitled "Energy Coexistence: Balancing Hydrocarbons and Renewable Energy to Meet the Needs and Requirements of Different Geographies," along with Mijal Brady of OLADE and Marc Nuytemans of Excelerate Energy. The panel was moderated by Amalia Olivera Riley of Subsurface Consultants.

During her presentation, Alfaro referred to the White Paper "Just Energy Transitions in Latin America and the Caribbean," prepared by Arpel and its member companies with the aim of "open a dialogue on this topic and contribute to building pathways for the development of the region in a competitive business environment."

"If population and economies continue to grow, energy demand will grow such that it is not a replacement transition, but an addition transition," she said.

She added: "Latin America and the Caribbean needs a considerable increase in the supply of safe, affordable, and, preferably, low-emission energy, and oil and gas industry plays a fundamental role to achieve so."

Alfaro stated that through this document, Arpel's member companies reached a consensus on the meaning of “just” in energy transitions; and that is an energy transition that respects the right for sustainable development.

"The term 'just' is fundamental, because it refers to ensuring that the costs and benefits of energy transitions are distributed equitably between different social and geographic axes, avoiding disproportionate negative impacts on vulnerable communities," she said.

"Now, since the publication, we have opened the dialogue with different key stakeholders, exchanging perspectives, both regionally and internationally," Alfaro concluded.
